What is Fog Bulbs

Fog bulbs are designed to aid visibility when bad weather conditions reduce your ability to see the road ahead. Front fog bulbs can cut through mist, fog, rain or even dust as they are mounted lower down than headlights in the front of the car.

The Eight Most Important Things to Know About Fog Bulbs

1

How fog bulbs Work

Don't get fog bulbs mixed up with regular headlights. The point of fog bulbs is to shine where headlights aren't effective. In foggy conditions, headlights end up illuminating more fog than anything else. This is partly due to the beam of the headlights that covers a lot of surface area, especially directly in front of the vehicle.

Halogen, HID, and LED fog bulbs use a different design that is better suited for foggy conditions. The beam they cast tends to angle down, covering more of the street than things directly in front of the car.

Most fog bulbs also have a yellowish hue that can penetrate deeper into fog than common headlight colors like blue or white. This is somewhat debated in scientific circles, but many fog light manufacturers stick to this convention. The different designs mean you will get the best results using each light in the right conditions.

2

When to Use fog bulbs

This one seems obvious right off the bat. Fog lights are for fog, right? Yes! You do get the best results when you actually use the fog bulbs in foggy conditions. The problem, however, is that people tend to overuse them, even when it's not foggy outside.

Some drivers, for example, have the habit of using fog bulbs at night for extra illumination. While this does light up the road more, it's usually unnecessary if the headlights are aimed correctly. As a result, this just wastes the energy and bulbs, reducing the light's lifespan.

3

You Can Add More Lights (Especially for Off-Roading)

Don't have any fog bulbs on your vehicle? Need more for challenging off-roading conditions? The great thing about fog bulbs is aftermarket and OEM fog light kits are common and relatively easy to mount.

Many popular off-roading manufacturers, like Toyota and Jeep, purposely design their off-roaders to accept different fog light assemblies and kits. In fact, whenever you see a truck or SUV meant for off-roading coming down the street, you will likely see a whole array of LED headlights and light bars attached for different weather conditions.

The good news is you don't need the whole off-road setup to add a fog light or two. The key is finding a good mounting spot on your vehicle and the right type/size of fog light. Check out different bulb options, like LED light bulbs or halogen fog bulbs.

Below or above the bumper tends to be the best mounting spot. If you don't have any space, you can look at some bracket options that attach to the frame of the car. The lights will wire directly to the car's power supply.

4

You Need to Choose the Right Color

There are often some intense debates over the best color for fog bulbs. A good majority of manufacturers stick with "selective yellow"that theoretically has longer wavelengths needed to penetrate deeper into a wall of fog. This is why you will see many fog light products with a yellow hue, especially with halogen bulbs and led bulbs.

Others disagree, however, that yellow really makes a big difference, particularly if the light itself doesn't have the best construction quality. Some drivers prefer white lights. At the very least, remember that color alone won't make a good fog light. The design and construction need to be high in quality to get good results.

5

There's a Right Mounting Spot

Most fog light bulbs mount low on a vehicle, much lower than normal headlights. This makes it easier to illuminate the road directly without casting direct light into the fog itself. Better still, a lower angle compliments the headlights so you don't have unnecessary overlap between your normal-use and fog-specific lights.

Keeping the lights under a foot from the ground is a good rule of thumb when figuring out just how low to go. If you have space around your bumper (above or below), this is a good starting point. You can also check out aftermarket mounting solutions like brackets and front grille guards if the bumper doesn't have the room.

6

There's a Perfect Angle for fog bulbs

If you are installing your own fog bulbs, you will need to get them aimed correctly before using them. Beyond the design and position of the lights, the illumination angle will determine how much of the light output hits the road versus the fog in front. You can't have them straight ahead since too much light will escape, but a low angle will only light up the immediate area in front of the bumper.

A guide can help get the right alignment for the beam of light. If you can find a flat stretch of road or driveway that meets a 90-degree wall, you can park the vehicle 25 feet away and move the lights around. The perpendicular surfaces will let you see how much light is cast downward versus straight out to get the best illumination.

7

Fog bulbs Don't Play Well with Brights

You can use other lights in addition to the fog lamps while driving in poor visibility conditions. Using your regular driving lights, for example, maybe necessary if you are driving in light fog at night. Other indicator lights like rear lights, turn signals, and flashers also make you more visible to other drivers.

The one light to avoid with fog bulbs is your high beams. Since the brights point straight ahead, they will cast out more light into the fog than the street itself. The results are often worse than just driving in fog with headlights alone.

8

You Shouldn't Rely Solely on Them

Finally, as with anything else, fog bulbs aren't the only thing that will keep you safe in foggy conditions. Safe driving is equally important, meaning you'll need to change your driving to match the challenging conditions. In other words, you can't drive like normal in fog, even with the right lighting setup.

More than anything else, slow down while driving in fog. Slower speeds increase your reaction time to things you may not be able to see through the fog until it's too late. If possible, leave extra following distance between yourself and other cars. Keep yourself visible with flashers or hazard lights. In a worst-case scenario, pull over and wait for the fog to lighten up.

What You Should Consider When Buying Fog Bulbs

Light Color
fog bulbs can lean towards different colors, including yellow, amber, and blue. Manufacturers denote the color with units of measurement called Kelvins. Lights that are within the range of about 3000 Kelvins will appear with the warmer yellow and amber colorations. Those with around 6000 Kelvins look blue. White fog lights sit in between these at about 5000 Kelvins. Go with lower Kelvin values if you want lights that can penetrate the fog better. Lights with higher Kelvins are preferable for maximum clarity, but they don't reach as far and can strain your eyes.

Protection Features
The LED bulbs of fog lights are prone to malfunctions when their chips receive physical damage. Because of this, you should find fog lights that possess protection features that will improve their reliability, especially if you may take your truck through rough terrain. Look for the IP (International Protection) rating to determine how strong the lights are and choose fog lights with IP67 ratings or higher. This will mean that they can endure dust and other solid particles completely, as well as contact with water. As opposed to IP65 lights, IP67-rated lights can also survive being submerged in water for a short period of time.

Compatibility
Of course, a portion of what you should always consider when buying fog lights is whether they are compatible with your Raptor in the first place. The best method for doing this is to search specifically for Ford Raptor fog light kits. This way, you will have certainty that the lights will fit within and securely fasten to the sections beneath the primary headlights that the truck has for this purpose. Fog light kits may also come with brackets to hold the lights in place. Additionally, you may consider factors such as the amp draw of the lights to make sure they will work without issues.

When to Use Fog Bulbs

Since fog bulbs are aimed low, and many of them use selective yellow light, they are relatively useless when the driving conditions are good. That means there is no reason to ever turn on your fog bulbs unless you experience a poor visibility situation when driving.

Some situations where fog bulbs can be useful include poor visibility conditions caused by rain, fog, snow, or even an excessive amount of dust in the air. If find yourself driving in a condition of poor visibility, and your high beams reflect back at you, causing a glare or dazzle effect, you should avoid using your high beams. If your low beams also create excessive glare, to the point where all you can see is snow, fog, rain, or dust, then a set of good fog lamps may allow you to actually see the road.

The catch is that fog bulbs, unlike main beam headlights, only illuminate the ground immediately in front of your vehicle. This makes it incredibly dangerous to drive at any kind of a high rate of speed when using only your fog bulbs. In fact, it’s actually illegal in some areas to drive with just your fog bulbs on, even if your main beam headlights are producing glare.

In most cases where fog bulbs are actually necessary, their primary function should be to allow you to proceed slowly, and carefully, until you reach either your destination or another location where you can wait out the bad weather.

Who Needs Fog Bulbs?

Since fog bulbs illuminate the ground directly in front of your vehicle, they really have two uses. The first is the intended use, which is to cut down on glare in very poor visibility and allow you to slowly proceed to your destination. The other is to see what is on the ground immediately in front of your vehicle under normal visibility conditions since main beam headlights typically leave a large void space between the front of a vehicle and the place where the beam actually hits the road surface.

While it may be tempting to use fog bulbs all the time to fill in this void space, there’s actually a good reason to turn them off. The issue is that having the road surface lit up right in front of you can tend to dilate your eyes, which actually reduces your ability to adequately see the darker road far in front of your vehicle. So while using your fog bulbs to see right in front of your car while driving very slowly is potentially useful, leaving them on at normal driving speeds, and in normal driving conditions, can be very bad news.

The fact is that, while fog bulbs do have their uses, most people don’t actually need them. Since they are only useful in a very narrow range of circumstances, you only need them if you actually find yourself driving under those specific circumstances a lot. And even if you do drive in poor visibility a lot, fog bulbs still won’t allow you to drive through snow or fog at a high rate of speed with anything even approaching a reasonable degree of safety.

Q: What type of bulb is used in fog lamps?

A: Halogen bulbs
Halogen bulbs have been used in vehicle lighting for decades. Most vehicles still come standard with halogen fog lights. Although they're an older technology, there are some advantages to using halogen bulbs rather than LED.

Q: Are LED fog light bulbs legal?

A: Fog lamps and fog light bulbs are not regulated by federal safety standards. When used in compliance with any applicable state or local laws, LED fog light bulbs are considered street-legal for use in the United States.

Q: What is the difference between fog lights and fog lamps?

A: So while some fog lights do produce selective yellow light, many produce white light. It's actually the bar-shaped beam of light, and the way that the beam is aimed, that makes a fog lamp a fog lamp, rather than the color.

Q: What color fog lights are legal?

A: California Fog Lights Law
Fog lamps must be used with, not instead of, regular headlights. Fog lights must be in the white to yellow color spectrum. A vehicle must not be equipped with more than eight headlamps at a time. A vehicle must not turn on more than four front lamps at a time.

Q: Should fog lights be halogen or LED?

A: Gone are the days of Halogens. The water droplets combined with fog are all the more dangerous as they reflect the light into the driver's eyes. LED fog lights can easily penetrate the fog and can make the visibility better. These white lights can really save the day while driving at night.

Q: What is the best brightness for fog lights?

A: Between 1,000 and 3,000 lumens
In general, fog lights should provide a wide, low beam pattern that illuminates the road directly in front of the vehicle and helps to enhance visibility in foggy, rainy, or other low-visibility conditions. The ideal range for fog lights is typically between 1,000 and 3,000 lumens.

Q: How bright should fog lights be?

A: So, how many lumens should fog lights be? Short answer: 1,200 lumens on the absolute minimum and around 2,000 lumens for an optimal driving experience in foggy conditions.

Q: Why is replacing halogen with LED illegal?

A: Therefore, in regards to spectral distribution, LED headlights illegal because FMVSS-108 implies a low-blue spectral distribution. In addition, LED headlights are illegal because they are dangerous and violate the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Q: Are fog lights obsolete?

A: Some modern headlights use sophisticated LED beams which can adapt to different conditions, including fog and poor visibility. These make conventional front foglights obsolete.

Q: What color fog lamp is best?

A: Yellow lights
Yellow lights are the best among fog light colors because they hit your retina in a way that enables you to focus on the road. Staring constantly at white light can frustrate the eye, and darker colors like blue and green have limited wavelength.

Q: Do fog lights blind other drivers?

A: The common problem caused by these fog lights for other drivers is the lights are annoying and can in some instances, blind on-coming drivers.

Q: Why do people use yellow fog lights?

A: The yellow fog light allows you to see further and clearer during foggy, snowy, or rainy weather, and reduces the chances of accidents.

Q: Is it illegal to have pink fog lights?

A: As for the pink and purple fog lights our second reader asked about, the answer is the same. They have to be white or yellowish white also, according to the same vehicle code section.

Q: Can you use headlight bulbs for fog lights?

A: The difference is not necessarily in the bulbs- some fog lamps use the exact same bulbs as some headlamps. The difference is primarily in the position of the lamp and the beam pattern.

Q: Can you replace fog lights with LEDs?

A: If you are looking to swap out your factory fog lights or daytime-running light (DRL) bulbs, upgrade to LED fog lights and DRL bulbs. Standard halogen bulbs give off a yellowish light and wear out quickly.

Q: Is it worth installing fog lights?

A: Fog lights are really only useful when visibility is under 100 feet, and they only help when they illuminate the area immediately around the car (not way in front). I find them really useful in white out conditions when you need to see the edges of the road better.

Q: Are fog lights good for heavy rain?

A: Can you use fog lights in heavy rain? You shouldn't use fog lights in heavy rain (unless it stops you from seeing over 100 metres in front of you). Remember, if you are caught using your fog lights unnecessarily, you could face a fine.

Q: What to do if your car doesn't have fog lights?

A: Turn on your low beams. Fog lights are nice, but they aren't necessary. Regular headlights work just fine. Just don't turn the high beams on in the fog—it will blind you and anyone that happens to be near you.
